Watersweb Offers Environmentally Friendly Web Design And Hosting

April 7, 2006

Enid, Oklahoma – Watersweb Solutions, a web design and hosting firm, announced today its purchase of clean, renewable energy to offset the energy used to support its office and hosting servers. Through a partnership with 3 Phases Energy, Watersweb is buying renewable energy certificates (RECs) that replace 67% of its electricity needs and helps improve air quality, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and represents an investment in a renewable energy future.

Michelle Waters, founder and owner of Watersweb Solutions, says the decision was in keeping with the company’s overall commitment to reducing global pollution.

We design websites and offer hosting services, so we are certainly a consumer of electricity. Clients who choose us for web hosting and design services can rest assured they are not contributing to global pollution – and are, in fact, becoming part of the ‘solution.,’” Waters said.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, conventional electricity generation causes air emissions; it’s estimated that fossil fuel-fired power plants are responsible for 67 percent of the nation’s sulfur dioxide emissions, 23 percent of nitrogen oxide emissions, and 40 percent of man-made carbon dioxide emissions. Renewable energy certificates work to combat the problem by allowing consumers to purchase “green” energy which is supplied to the region’s power grid, replacing electricity generated from non-renewable sources such as fossil fuels and nuclear power.

The program works because of the National Energy Act of 1978, a federal law that mandates that those who manage the grid purchase renewable energy when it is available,” says Waters. “Each time a consumer or business purchases renewable energy, it decreases the same amount of conventionally generated electricity purchased for the grid. It also has the added benefit of encouraging the building of new, renewable generation facilities in the US, since certificate sales drive the creation of new facilities.”

The purchase of the renewable energy certificates from 3 Phases Energy also makes Watersweb Solutions eligible to use the Green-e logo on its website, which gives consumers an easy way to identify high quality, certified renewable energy options, as well as everyday products made with certified renewable energy.

Watersweb Solutions is also in the process of joining the Environmental Protection Agency’s Green Power partnership, a voluntary program that recognizes leaders in the green power market and works to standardize best practices in corporate environmental management.

According to the EPA website, Watersweb Solutions is one of the first Oklahoma businesses to join this partnership,” says Waters. “Hopefully, other businesses in the region will join as well. Clean energy makes good business sense. I think it’s especially important to see that a small business or an individual can actually have a measurable, meaningful impact on helping the environment.”
